What is the BEST Pre Workout powder?

In the search for the ideal pre workout, customers come across familiar wording and bold claims from all of the brands. Skin splitting pumps, extreme energy, roadmap vascularity, laser focus - the list goes on. While some of the wording may be a little bold, there are pre workouts that do truly deliver, and in a saturated industry, some stand out as leaders of the pack. So, what is the best pre workout?

Like most things in life, there truly isn’t a black and white answer to this question. The answer lies in what the user is looking for from their pre workout, their own personal stimulant tolerance, and what they may be stacking it with. Although there is no direct answer, I’m going to do my best to give an answer that is concise enough to help someone who is looking for the best pre workout find something that may fit that description for them.

First things first, it’s key to determine what caffeine level somebody is looking for. For the purposes of this article, we are going to define a low caffeine pre workout as approximately 200mg of caffeine, a medium stimulant pre as approximately 300mg of caffeine, and a high stimulant pre workout as approximately 400mg of caffeine. You could make a great case that none of those are truly low stimulant amounts, but in the world of pre workouts it is usually Stimulant free or 150mg+ of caffeine, so we need to define the low stimulant category with what we have to work with.

First up, in the low stimulant category.

Nutrabolics Supernova Legacy, Cutler Nutrition Prevail, and Cbum Essentials would all be contenders for this title.

Each of the above listed pre workouts contains 200mg of caffeine. So let’s get in to what the differences are:

  1. When it comes to mental focus, Prevail is going to lead the way. Although Cbum Essentials has a great dose of L-Tyrosine, the massive amount of Alpha GPC in Cutler Nutrition Prevail gives this the edge for mental focus.
  2. When it comes to energy, Supernova Legacy will take the win in this with the addition of 600mg of Dendrobium. Although the caffeine is the same in all of these, the addition of Dendrobium will give Supernova Legacy an edge when it comes to energy in our low stimulant pre workouts.
  3. Getting in to pumps, Cbum Essentials will come out on top. Although all of these pre workouts have a similar amount of Citrulline/Citrulline Malate, Cbum essentials comes out at the highest with 4 grams of pure L Citrulline per scoop. It also has the addition of Pink Himilayan Salt, which will provide an edge over the others.

As you can likely see from getting into the 3 different points above, it will be tough to crown one winner, as each of the three top low stimulant pre workouts emerge as victorious in a different key area. What that means, is that it’s going to come down to what part of a pre workout is most important to you.

Next up is the medium stimulant category. In this category, we have one clearly defined winner. TC Nutrition Batch 27. Batch is a beautifully formulated product with 325mg of caffeine, 8 grams of Citrulline Malate, 3.5 grams of Beta Alanine, and more. This product is an example of true synergy in a formula. The blend hits better than the sum of the parts should. The pumps are phenomenal, the energy is long lasting, the endurance is great, and even the taste is second to none. This product is a knock out winner in the category, and one that if you haven’t tried comes highly recommended from us at Supplement World.

A very solid contender would be the new to Canada pre workout by A.B.E. (All Black Everything). While Batch 27 has the edge on ABE formula wise in our opinion (more Citrulline, more beta alanine), ABE comes out on top in the value game with an extra 10 servings for only $5.00 more. It should also be mentioned that ABE is Informed Choice certified, meaning that it is safe for athletes who compete in drug tested sports and would be our number one pre workout recommendation overall at the time of this writing for those looking for an Informed Choice pre workout.

Finally, we are getting in to the high stimulant beasts. Here we have Pump Addict Max, Ryse Loaded Pre, and Ryse Godzilla as contenders for the title of best high stimulant pre workout.

Pump Addict Max is a change up from the original Pump Addict formula, and actually went down in caffeine to 350mg from the original at 400mg. With that said, they added Alpha GPC, more L Tyrosine, and Huperzine to make the overall feel better and stronger, even with less caffeine.

Ryse Loaded Pre and Ryse Godzilla both come in at a whopping 400mg of caffeine, but that is about where the comparison ends on the Ryse options. Ryse Godzilla is undoubtedly the most stacked formula on the shelves in the entire country, with full clinical doses (and beyond for some ingreditents) of Citrulline, Beta Alanine, Betaine, and Creatine. This is technically more than just a pre workout, but actually your full daily dose of the most research proven performance enhancing supplements. It also has Cognizin for mental focus, Theobromine for extra energy, and is the only pre workout in Canada using Casein Tripeptides (VasoDrive) to help with the pump. This pre workout is in a league of it's own, but the reason that it's not objectively labelled as the winner of this category is because it is also in a league of it's own when it comes to price, coming in at $89.99 for 20 full servings. Ryse Loaded Pre is not as stacked as Godzilla, but still has a solid amount of L-Citruline, ThinkAmine Choline for mental focus, plenty of Beta Alanine at 3.5 grams, and more.

When it comes time to make a decision here, it is tough. Upon a pure formulation standpoint, Ryse Godzilla is clearly the winner. But at approximately 40% more dollars per serving, it should have higher doses of everything. If money is not a concer when it comes to making your selection, then Godzilla is. If you're like the majority and looking for the best option at a more standard price point, then we've gotta give this one to Believe Supplements Pump Addict Max. The overall blend is perfect for a high stim pre, with nootropics to round out the brute energy with some dialled in mental focus. 8 grams of Citruline Malate 1:1 is plenty for a pump, 3.5 grams of beta alanine is above the clinical minimum dose of 3.2 grams, and 2.5 grams of betaine is a solid amount for hydration, strength, and performance, and at $54.99 for 20 full servings, the price point is reasonable for how great the formula is. We do need to give a special mention to Ryse Loaded Pre for it's value proposition for a very solid formula at only $5.00 more than Pump Addict Max for 10 more servings, but when it came time to choose one winner the additional Nootropics and performance ingredients in Pump Addict Max made the decision for us.

One key point to make on Ryse Godzilla is that we technically could have grouped it into the low stimulant category with a one scoop serving and then it would be a 40 serving tub and the value would be right in line with the other options. At 40 single scoop servings, there could be a case made that this pre workout would be the best low stimulant pre workout in Canada. At the full serving, it is truly the best formula we have ever seen, but because it would be out of the price range of so many people we simply couldn't give it the number one spot. With that said, if you're looking to have a tub kick around for those PR days or the sessions when you really need it, it's not the worst idea.
